Long-Term Neurological Risks Increasingly Recognized
Emerging research has linked even a single mild traumatic brain injury to increased long-term risks of serious neurological and psychiatric conditions. Studies published in major journals such as The Lancet and JAMA Neurology associate mTBI with a higher likelihood of developing dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, depression, anxiety disorders, and PTSD. These findings challenge earlier assumptions that mild concussions resolve without lasting consequences. Instead, evidence suggests that brain injury can initiate long-term degenerative processes.
